The School of Oriental and African Studies (or SOAS for short) is unique, in that it is the only Higher Education institution in Europe specialising in the study of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East.
This creates an academic atmosphere you cannot find anywhere else in the UK. In their own words:
"On the one hand, this means that SOAS scholars grapple with pressing issues - democracy, development, human rights, identity, legal systems, poverty, religion, social change - confronting two-thirds of humankind while at the same time remaining guardians of specialised knowledge in languages and periods and regions not available anywhere else in the UK."
Over half the university's students are from outside the UK, spread across 130 countries throughout the world. They are proud of their 89% student satisfaction rate, and the student-staff ration of 11.3:1 is one of the best in the country. The university's library is also renowned as one of the best resources in the world for the study of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, with more than 1.5 million books.
Based in Bloomsbury in the heart of London, alongside a number of other University of London universities, SOAS students enjoy all the endless benefits of the Capital city.
